Andy Shaw
Andy Shaw stands as one of the most accomplished and versatile aviators in British flying history, with a career spanning four decades that has redefined excellence across multiple disciplines.
In 1984, at just 18 years old, Andy made history by becoming the youngest fully qualified BAPC/BHPA instructor, marking the beginning of what would become 40 years of distinguished teaching and mentorship. His expertise spans hang gliding, paragliding, paramotoring and parascending, having been grandfathered through all these disciplines within the BHPA.
His military service in the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment, one of the world’s most elite units, included a notable stint with the Red Devils display team.
Andy’s competitive achievements are extraordinary. He has claimed the British championship title 14 times between 1978 and 2024, demonstrating remarkable longevity at the highest level of the sport. His international success peaked in 1986 when he became parascending World Champion and set a World Record with three consecutive 00.00cm precision landings. He later conquered paragliding, securing the World Champion title in 2000, followed by Silver and Bronze medals at the 2002 and 2004 World Championships respectively. In 2004, he achieved the FAI Number 1 pilot ranking worldwide and receiving the prestigious Royal Aero Club Silver Award.
Andy’s contribution to the sport extends beyond competition. He has served on the BAPC/BHPA Council Executive and continues to serve on BHPA FSC committees, shaping the future of British flying sports. As the founder of Thermal Chasers and a current BHPA Chief Flying Instructor qualified in HG, PA, PG, and PPG, he remains actively engaged in advancing the sport, including flying the innovative PeaBee 70 and SPHG.
His four-decade journey from teenage instructor to world champion and respected leader has left an indelible mark on British aviation, inspiring generations of pilots and setting standards of excellence that continue to influence the sport today.
